Tyra Trent | Towleroad

The body of transgender woman Tyra Trent was found on Saturday in the basement of a vacant home in Baltimore. Trent worked as a prostitute and told family she was often attacked for the way she looked. Autopsy results indicate she was asphyxiated.

TransOhio is asking members of the Ohio transgender community to complete a needs assessment. Responses will serve as a snapshot of the Ohio transgender community, including transgender people, partners and allies, who are current Ohioans or individuals who were born in Ohio. If you are a member of the Ohio transgender community, please fill out the needs assessment before Feb. 28.

U.S. President Barack Obama announced the Department of Justice will no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court because he believes it is unconstitutional. Attorney General Eric Holder said the congressional debate during passage of DOMA “contained numerous expressions reflecting moral disapproval of gays and lesbians and their intimate and family relationships — precisely the kind of stereotype-based thinking and animus the Equal Protection Clause is designed to guard against.”

In response, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, vowed to introduce legislation to repeal DOMA. House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, shot back with a response that indicates he doesn’t pay attention to anything that happens in the House or listens to anything he says.

Columbus erupts over S.B. 5. | Ted Strickland

Thousands of protesters from across Ohio descended upon the Columbus to protest Senate Bill 5, union-busting legislation that could affect domestic partner benefits for state workers. Most of the protesters were locked out of the Statehouse during hearings on the bill. Gov. John Kasich is expected to sign S.B. 5 if it approved by the legislature.

Voters in Brattleboro and Marlboro, Vt., voted to arrest former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney for “crimes against our Constitution.” The nonbinding, symbolic measure instructs town police to “extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them.”

Georgia state Rep. Bobby Franklin introduced legislation that would require people to prove a miscarriage occurred naturally. If it can’t be proven the miscarriage occurred naturally, the person could face felony charges.
