GenderBloc, the University of Cincinnati’s radical queer organization that focuses on trans activism, has produced a survival guide to help trangender people navigate UC’s tricky policies and resources. GenderBloc members contacted administrators to see what their current policies and resources were for trans students, and worked with them to form policies where there were none. Some of the topics can be generalized to most schools, and the guide can serve as a template for other places to make a guide of their own.
Questions answered in the “Trans Survival Guide” are ones like, “Can I officially change my name or gender marker with the registrar?”; “How do I let my professors know I am transgender or genderqueer so they don’t out me in class?”; and “Are there gender-neutral or single-stall bathrooms on campus?” (For that last one, visit GenderBloc’s Web site for a complete list of those bathrooms on UC’s campus.)
