Burning Bowl: Out with the old, in with the new

On Saturday, I attended Burning Bowl, an annual affirmation ceremony celebrating the new year, organized by Affinity Community Services and Amigas Latinas.

Participants purged the previous year’s challenges and negativity by writing them down and burning them. They then wrote down affirmations, goals and positive thoughts for 2012, which organizers will mail them midyear.

I perform with Queer Choir, and we sang two songs during the ceremony. We started with a queer version of “Doe, Ray, Me,” from The Sound of Music, and closed with “Joyful, Joyful,” from Sister Act 2.

As far as Stuff Queer People Need To Know goes, I’m planning to post more in the new year, and branch out to new and interesting topics I haven’t covered before.
